Spread your Creative Wings ATBs

by Amy Bowerman

Hooray Hooray, It’s Block Hop day!   The Artists on the Block website has officially launched and we have teamed up with Stencil Girl to kick off the Artist Trading Block movement with a fantastic blog hop .  It’s not just any blog hop it’s a BLOCK HOP!  Come along and let’s explore creativity in 3-D with Stencil girl and the ATB.  There will be oodles of inspiration along the way and prizes…oh my!

Spread your Creative Wings ATBs | Pluckingdaisies.com #StencilGirl #Sizzix #TheATB

Stencil Girl is sponsoring the Be an Artist on the Block Workshop at CHA and we all decided we just couldn’t wait till after the show to share the creative magic that happens when you combine Stencil Girl Stencils with Eileen Hull’s Sizzix Block dies!

I know, it’s like getting to peek at Christmas presents isn’t it?

Stencil Girl, Sizzix, Artists on the Block "Block Hop" | Pluckingdaisies.com #TheATB

I must tell you I have had a blast creating ATBs.  I literally can. NOT. STOP.  You’ll see, ATBs are like Lays Potato Chips…no one can make “just one”.

I’ve taken a shine to creating a series of ATB that can be traded individually or kept together as a set.  Fun, fun, FUN I tell you!  I call my latest series…

Spread Your Creative Wings

Spread your Creative Wings ATBs | Pluckingdaisies.com #StencilGirl #Sizzix #TheATB

After all that is what we hope to encourage everyone to do with the ATB movement…stretch their creative wings and fly, Fly, FLY!

Spread your Creative Wings ATBs | Pluckingdaisies.com #StencilGirl #Sizzix #TheATB

It’s pretty hard not to feel a surge of creativity and a gnawing urge to create with a bunch of Stencil Girl Stencils whispering in your ear “Create with Me!”  So naturally I had to, and the story went a little something like this…

Spread your Creative Wings ATBs | Pluckingdaisies.com #StencilGirl #Sizzix #TheATB

Once there was a bird.  A pretty little bird that you can find out how to make HERE…as long as you promise not to judge me…er… the little bird because those pictures were taken when she was just a fledgling bloggy bird.

Anyway the bird lived on a metal block in a metal nest and blah, blah, blah but she wanted to try new things….like stenciling.

Spread your Creative Wings ATBs | Pluckingdaisies.com #StencilGirl #Sizzix #TheATB

So she started stenciling birds.  Since birds of a feather “stick together” she gave them all feathers and they started having rowdy parties where they shout inspiring words to each other.   The little bird was all like “You go birds!”  But then she realized she was feeling pretty inspired and awesome too so she spread those creative wings a little further and…

Spread your Creative Wings ATBs | Pluckingdaisies.com #StencilGirl #Sizzix #TheATB

Started stenciling, embossing, coloring and glittering like crazy!  Crazy-Awesome that is.

Spread your Creative Wings ATBs | Pluckingdaisies.com #StencilGirl #Sizzix #TheATB

By this time the Bird was REALLY feeling the creative flow and  decided it was time to Risk adventure, Embrace this glorious moment, fly, and…

Spread your Creative Wings ATBs | Pluckingdaisies.com #StencilGirl #Sizzix #TheATB

Pfft…forget flying said the bird, these creative wings were made to SOAR!

Spread your Creative Wings ATBs | Pluckingdaisies.com #StencilGirl #Sizzix #TheATB

Now that the bird has learned how to soar she can sit back, admire the view and reflect on everything she learned about those ol’ creative wings of hers.

Spread your Creative Wings ATBs | Pluckingdaisies.com #StencilGirl #Sizzix #TheATB

What’s the moral of this little birdie story?  To tell you the truth I had no idea what I was doing when I started this project.  I had no ideas, no plan I just jumped in.  I tried things I’ve never done before without knowing whether they would work or not.  It was liberating and oh so freeing…like flying.   It’s quite a trip to get so lost in your creations that you literally feel like you are just soaring through it.  Come to think of it I don’t think I created this project at all…I think IT created ME.

That my friends is the beauty of Art and why my greatest hope is that everyone will spread their creative wings with The Artists on the Block and fly free!

Ok ok, I went off on a tangent.  What you were looking for a tutorial?  Don’t worry your pretty little heads I’ll have tutorials for each and every one of these ATBs coming soon Buuut….you will have to visit us at TheArtistsOnTheBlock.com for them :)

Don’t forget to check out the Artists on the Block on  Facebook and Twitter and share your ATB creations with us!  What will you create with your ATBs?

Stop by Stencil Girl Talk for tons of tutorials and inspiration and Like them on Facebook to stay in the know about giveaways, blog hops, limited releases and more!

But wait there’s MORE!  Hop on by all of these fabulous blogs and prepare to be amazed by ATB inspiration…Stencil Girl is having a giveaway so the more blogs you visit and comment on the more chances you have to win fabulous stencils!

Next Stop on the Block Hop…

Hope your creativity soars today!

Amy….I loved your blog post. You have such a way with words and storytelling! :) Anita says that she is rooming with you at CHA. I can’t wait to meet you in person! :) Your writing is so infectious and makes me want to experiment and play with ATBs NOW!!!! Stencil Girl stencils…I think she’s very close to me…here in Missouri. I’m just now getting on that bandwagon. :) You will need to indoctrinate me as I am a Stencil Girl virgin. haha I am loving the ATB idea and all of the possibilities that those little jewels possess. Your blocks and birds are amazing! Thanks so much for the inspiration and the sweet comment you left on my blog. <3 Candy

I can’t wait to see your creative magic on the ATBs Candy! Yay can’t wait to meet you at CHA too! You will fall in love with Stencil Girl Stencils. Designed by artists FOR artists, what could be better! Everything I learned about stenciling I learned from Marjie Kemper. Whenever I use stencils I implement the WWMD? technique (what would Marjie do?) and if that doesn’t work I just go to her blog and re-read her tutorials :)

I’m bringing the stencil girl stencils to CHA with me for “The be an artist on the block” class I’m teaching with Eileen Hull so we will have to have a stenciling ATB session in CA!

Thanks so much Judy! That means a lot to me. my usual tutorial posts were becoming so dry and tired I was putting myself to sleep writing them and most likely boring my readers to death. This hop helped me change it up a bit. Oddly enough I was speaking the words out loud as I typed them which made me feel like a narrator in my own story. (what you don’t type out loud?). This is a fine practice if you are home alone but when some one (quietly) walks into the room and catches you in mid narration it gets a little weird :)
