Hello friends! I’m still working feverishly on wrapping things up for my son’s Skylanders Party this weekend. If this is your first time here you may not know that the majority of the supplies for this Skylanders party are dollar store items. Today I’m going to show you how to make Skylanders iron on favor bags. You can make these bags with just about any character, quote or image….if you can print it, you can put it on one of these bags.
How to make Iron-on Favor Bags
I picked up these “felt bags” at the dollar store (3 to a pack). They are quite prevalent and can be found in the dollar section at most major retailers. However, Dollar Tree sells them in sets of 3. I don’t know about you but I like a lot of bang for my buck!
First, I must warn you that it is not recommended to iron these bags…my now blue iron is proof of that. That being said I had already purchased a boatload of said bags and was filled with foolish determination to “make it work”. After three rounds of craft fail I emerged successful. I was even able to remove the melted blue “whatever” from my iron.
The secret to success with this project is parchment paper and timing. You will need to move quickly and efficiently to “make it work”. Since these bags come in sets of three for a $1 it won’t cost much to get it right!
I’m totally digging these Transfermations printable iron-on transfer sheets for dark fabric. I found them at Michael’s and they retail for $15 for 10 sheets. If you use a coupon you can snag it for around $8 (less than $1 per sheet….I did the math).
STEP 1: Print your images on Transfermations (I used Skylanders Favor tags from A Lil’ Frosting Shop). Cut them out.
Keep the directions from your Transfermations packet handy and do EXACTLY as they say!
STEP 2: Peel the backing off your Transfermations image and place it where you want it. Cover with a sheet of parchment paper. Apply heavy pressure and iron ONLY the image in smooth strokes for 3-4 seconds. Gently peel back the parchment paper to check for air bubbles and peeling corners. If this occurs (it will) apply heat to these areas for 1-2 seconds.
Like I said, it will probably take a few tries to get it right. Here is one of my failed attempts. I applied the iron across the entire surface which not only fused the bag together but burned a hole right through.
If at first you don’t succeed….Try, Try again! Here is a close up of the transferred image.
I’m quite pleased with how the Skylanders favor bags turned out with a little practice and patience. The kids will be using these bags to collect “treasure” (just like in the game). I’ll have more on the treasure boxes and the treasure I found to fill them…from the dollar store of course… in a bit.
In the meantime I’m working on a non-skylanders project using the Transfermations iron-on sheets. Mama needs a new handbag and Transfermations is here to help me make one
