Retro Barbie Furniture goes to Wonderland

by Amy Bowerman

Greetings from Wonderland!  This month at The Altered Alice our theme is Red, White and Blue.  I had a tough time figuring out how to incorporate this theme without being too patriotic. Once again everything fell into place….eventually.

Alice in Wonderland Miniature Garden Tea Party

The patriotic paper flower arrangement in the back is a golden oldie from my early blogging days.  I considered adding Alice elements to it but decided against it just in case I ever decide to use it as a centerpiece for the 4th of July.

Alice in Wonderland Miniature Tea Party

I snagged a teeny tiny tea set at the flea market a few weeks ago which was the perfect jumping off point for my design.  Now all I needed was a tiny table and chairs to get this miniature Tea party off the ground.  Luckily, I have been a “saver” of things since early childhood.  I just know I will find a suitable use for random items at some point.  Unfortunately, my dear Mother does not feel the same way and grew tired of my childhood junk cluttering the attic, basement and closets.  She seized the opportunity to purge some items while I was away at college including all the My Little Pony houses…”the Castle?  Ma how could you!” A stack of YM magazines…”Geez Louise mother Luke Perry was on the cover of one of those!” and a bunch of Barbie’s, Barbie clothes and furniture.  “You may have gotten Day-to-Night Barbie’s briefcase but thank God I still have her newspaper otherwise I could never forgive you!”

Retro Barbie Furniture Meets Alice in Wonderland

Retro Barbie Furniture gets the Wonderland treatment

Ah yes my childhood memories seemed as if they may be lost forever.  Mommy dearest pitched a few of them but she did NOT get them all.  Deep within the corners of the furthest Cubby hole I found a box containing treasures untold.  A box filled with mismatched Retro Barbie furniture, My Little Pony accessories and of course Day-to-Night Barbie’s Newspaper.  *Please note:  My Mother did leave the My Little Ponies alone.  She knows better.  So you see…there IS a method to my madness!  Anything can prove its usefulness at some point.  In this case it only took 26 years.  Hooray for 1986!

Alice in Wonderland Altered Barbie Furniture Tutorial

Alter Barbie Furniture with Alcohol ink and Mod Podge

For the table I added some alcohol ink, Mod Podged some paper cards my son was kind enough to win for me at the arcade, and embellished with Sharpie, Glossy accents and ribbon.  Alice and the White Rabbit were stamped on Sheet metal using the Stampendous Wonderland set.

Have a seat!

The tiny My Little Pony chairs were spray painted and Mod Podged with stamped hearts from the Stampendous Wonderland set.  Glossy Accents and Enamel Accents were also used to embellish.

I would totally put this in my house…if it were bigger

The Paper flowers were made with a mix of Tim Holtz Paper Stash packs and other papers from my stash.  You can read all about this arrangement here.

So there you have it!  A little Retro rescue…and all is well in the world!  I’m still a bit miffed about the My little Pony Castle but at least I still have Majesty the Unicorn and Spike the Dragon.  Hopefully I’ll get over it in the next 26 years or so :)

Here’s all the deets on The Altered Alice  challenge and some helpful links to products I used from our sponsor.  Hope to see you down the Rabbit Hole!!

The White Queen gave a deep sigh, and laid her head on Alice’s shoulder. `I am so sleepy?’ she moaned.
`She’s tired, poor thing!’ said the Red Queen. `Smooth her hair — lend her your nightcap — and sing her a soothing lullaby.’
`I haven’t got a nightcap with me,’ said Alice, as she tried to obey the first direction: `and I don’t know any soothing lullabies.”
`I must do it myself, then,’ said the Red Queen, and she began:
Hush-a-by lady, in Alice’s lap! Till the feast’s ready, we’ve time for a nap: When the feast’s over, we’ll go to the ball — Red Queen, and White Queen, and Alice, and all!
— Chapter 9, Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There
In the United States, we are celebrating our Independence Day this month, so we have a patriotic Red, White & Blue color challenge for you! Of course here in Wonderland we know those colors are for the  White Queen, the Red Queen, and Alice’s blue dress! Enter your red, white & blue project by July 27 for a chance to win a prize from our sponsor. All entries are welcome, but those that feature Wonderland will have two chances to win instead of one.

WOWW!! That is unbelievably amazing!!. I want to be shrunk (like honey, I shrunk the kids) so that I could come visit and have some tea LOL. Ahh, good thing Mothers know best :). Love that you were able to work on it eventually, never mind 26 years later :). The flowers are STUNNING!. Gorgeous chairs, oh don’t let me start with the table! LOVE the card deck, I’m thrilled beyond belief now, awed and inspired. TFS!. SWEETNESS.

Amy, I really love this project, and I am so glad you had the flowers to share. Lovely bouquet! The tea party scene is charming, i really love what you have done with the furniture and your metal dolls are fab! Where did you get your miniature playing cards, or have they been in your stash forever? Love the way they fit perfectly on your table top!

Hey Lynne! That’s one of my favorite flower arrangements too. It was my first Featured project also which makes it extra special. I got the cards at the arcade believe it or not. I begged my 6 yr old to get them for me with his winnings and convinced him that a pair of plastic teeth and a tootsie roll would be a great prize if he could please throw in the cards. I bet they could be found at Oriental Trading club or something of the sort. If we ever go back to the arcade I will try to win you some :)
