I’ve been dying to make patriotic paper flowers ever since I spied some Americana inspired paper at the craft store from DCWV. With Memorial Day and the 4th of July on the way I thought it would be fitting to create a Red, White and Blue floral centerpiece for the festivities.
I was so excited to learn that the Kraft Journal was hosting a patriotic themed challenge not only because of my longing to use my patriotic paper but also to try using Kraft paper in a flower arrangement. There is a Floral Frenzy Blogger challenge hosted by Lisa Somerville which seemed appropriate to enter my red, white and blue paper flowers into as well. I am always in somewhat of a “floral frenzy” when creating paper flowers; trying to make deadlines for challenges and keep up with commissions. I have 6 more paper flower arrangements to complete by next Saturday so my coffee pot and I will be working serious overtime!!
I cut my flowers with Tim Holtz Alterations Tattered Florals and Kilgore Daisies Sizzix Dies.
A variety of papers were used including Tim Holtz Seasonal Paper Stash, DCWV Stars and Stripes, and White and Craft card stock colored with Distress Ink.
I had a lot of fun making this paper flower arrangement. I have learned so much this past year about making paper flowers. I love how these challenges force me to think outside the box and experiment with different techniques and materials. This was the first time I used Kraft paper to make paper flowers and I absolutely LOVE the texture it gives an arrangement…..especially when colored with Distress INK!! If you stamp in white on Kraft paper and color with distress ink it will create a really cool resist.
I love using Distress ink PERIOD but the way it reacts to Kraft paper is awesome! I just love the grungy aged look it lends….like vintage Americana at it’s best!
You can find links to tutorials on how I cut curl and assemble my flowers at the end of this post.
I had so much fun with the patriotic glitter cardstock…not to mention the fact that I got it on clearance…SCORE!! I think it adds just the right amount of sparkle…like fireworks on the 4th of July.
Speaking of fireworks…this is one of my FAVORITE blooms! It is made from Tim Holtz’s “Seasonal” Paper Stash. This particular page had vintage firework images on it. Check out my custom mix of red, white and blue stones in the bucket. If you are going to do red, white and blue you have to do it all the way
I really like this one too. I love how the layering of the star and striped papers give this paper flower an Old Glory look. However my absolute favorite flower is this one…
I just can’t get enough of Tim’s Seasonal Paper Stash paper….I’m a sucker for vintage images.
I call these my firework flowers. I try to shape them to give off maximum impact in the way of color. I combined red, white and blue buttons and beads to complete the patriotic look.
These paper flowers are ready for a party! I’m a little late for Memorial Day but just in time for the 4th of July!

Love. I was born July 3rd, so my birthday theme has always been Red, White and Blue. These will be perfect for my annual 4th of July Partaaay. Thank you.
Hi Amy. This is Johnnie’s grandma, Doris. I haven’t met you but I’m in love with your paper flowers.
I feel like I just went to Sizzix University. These are gorgeous. Something has been holding me back from getting my flower layering on… pin pin pin! You are my hero.
Johnnie some day I will sit with you and show you all my tricks. It so hard to do a tutorial on how I make the flowers. Half the time I don’t even know how I did it…hence I have a curio cabinet FULL of flowers I can’t even sell, since I need them as reference for new arrangements
Someday my friend SOME DAy!
I saw your project on at the Kraft journal blog and had to stop by! Your flowers are gorgeous!

Amy..I was really excited to see this post. You were featured on Kraft Journal as “Feature me Friday” and I LOVE this adorable creation. What a wonderful, fun design. Each flower is so uniquely all it’s own. I’m a Patriotic Color nut, and love the Americana age thing.. hope to try a few of these and use them for my daughter in law’s mailable birthday gift. My son is in the military, so we are red, white and blue thru and thru. Thanks for sharing a wonderful post. and Congratulations on a great win for a great project.
