Old Comic Book Flower Pot

by Amy Bowerman

One of my Husbands co worker’s is a HUGE comic book fan.  He loved the vintage comic book school desk I made so I created this flower-pot as a house-warming gift for him.  Again, I used the same old comic books I had on hand and some clippings that I had left over from making the desk.  I really enjoyed this project because like the comic book desk I was able to turn old comic books into modern art.  Most men would look at you cross-eyed if you gave them a flower-pot as a gift but not this guy….he was floored…as was I.  That’s what makes handmade gift giving so special because you can play to a persons interests and give them a unique gift they couldn’t get anywhere else.

I used Krylon silver spray paint to color a clay pot I picked up for a few bucks at Ocean State Job Lot (this is the place to go for cheap clay pots to alter) then I used some Krylon black crackle spray paint over it.  I love the crackled look with the silver lines peeking through.  Kind of reminds me of those mirrors from the seventies with the gold veins.

Once the paint was dry I went to work Mod Podgeing the Comic Book clippings around the clay pot.  The great thing about Mod Podge is the lovely lustrous shine it gives.  The bright colors of the old comic book clippings were completely restored with a few coats of Mod Podge!

Here is an alternate view of the flower-pot.  As with the comic book desk I wanted to make sure as many heroes as possible were represented (especially since it was going to an avid comic book fan).

I love all the phrases along the rim of the pot.  Who knew you could just throw consonants and vowels together to make battle sounds.  I think “frack!” is my favorite. :)

A manly display for mums indeed!

Although it won’t be seen too often I couldn’t leave the bottom plate hero-less!  I love how this pic showcases the Krylon crackle and Wolverine of course. “Snikt!”

It’s easy as to transform an ordinary clay pot into a work of art.  All you need is Mod Podge, Spray Paint and some old comic books!   Using just a few supplies you probably have on hand you can create a unique gift or home decor item before you can say “Thwop!”

Have a “Super” Day!

OMG what fabulous work you do. Geeez, I may never throw anything out again. I can see myself renting some storage space! lol. I came to this link thru the beautiful glass table you restored. Incredible. And thanks for the step by step. It’s helpful to know what sprays etc, work on what surfaces.

With this piece can you tell me what you used to seal in the comics without the comic paper wrinkling up, or the inks run.

Thanks, Laura
