Hello friends! As promised I have another Skylanders party tutorial for you. If you have a Skylanders enthusiast in your midst you may know that the “Chompy” is a common enemy in the Skylanders Game. The Chompy is one of the easiest enemies to thwart. They are also the easiest to make by hand! Today I’ll be taking you through the steps to make a Chompy. This project is sure to delight your little “portal master”.
The original plan was to make the Chompies out of Paper mache, but I lucked out on a recent trip to the Christmas Tree Shop and snagged these Easter birds on clearance. I’ll have another tutorial coming soon involving Skylanders ”enemies” made from paper mache. For now you can find my paper mache recipe in this pinata tutorial.
I wanted to do cartwheels in the aisle when I saw these Easter Chicks on clearance. I was ready to do backflips when I checked out and discovered that they were only 75 cents each!!
After removing the eyes, beaks, and hats the Easter chicks were given a reverse make-over Skylanders style!
How to make a Skylanders Chompy
Depending on when you will be making your Chompy you may be able to find something like my Easter Chicks to turn into a Chompy. If not all you need is a balloon, paper mache and a little patience and you can achieve the same effect. You can find my recipe and instructions in this tutorial for creating paper mache.
Once you have the base of your Chompy (be it bird or paper mached balloon) you will need to paint it green. I used Krylon Citrus and Krylon Glitterblast Citrus Punch to color my Chompies.
Assembling the faces is tons of fun and will have you feeling like you are working on the next Muppet Movie!
Creating Antenna
To create Chompy Antenna you will need Green Pipe Cleaners and a hot glue gun. *Mod Podge has saved me from a multitude of glue gun burns with their new finger caps. Pick up a pack if you can…your finger tips will thank you!
Twist 4 pipe cleaners together. Create a small curve in the center and hot glue the antenna to the top of your Chompy body.
Creating Eyes
Chompies have some unusual looking eyes on top of their antenna. I was planning to use plastic spoons to create the eyes but the spoons were too big. I realized quickly that the ends of the plastic cutlery were the perfect size for Chompy eyes!
1) Cut the rounded ends off of plastic cutlery using Tonic Scissors. 2) Unless you are using colored cutlery you will need to color the plastic. I used Alcohol inks (Meadow and Citrus) applied to a cotton ball to color mine. 3) To create the “eye-ball” apply Glitter Glue to the center of the ends of the plastic cuttlery. 4) Hot glue to ends of Pipe Cleaners.
Creating the Mouth and Teeth
I have used Fun Foam in nearly every DIY birthday party I have ever done. It’s so easy to create with and inexpensive to boot!
Start by sketching out a pattern of your mouth and teeth. *If you plan on making more than one Chompy or would like to keep your patterns for future reference be sure to cut them out of sturdy material like chipboard. Cut out your patterns and trace them on coordinating colored sheets of fun foam and cut those out as well.
To give my Chompy teeth a more realistic look I added detailing with Copic Marker (E33) and edged each tooth with Antique Linen Distress ink.
For the Mouth I also added detailing with Copic Marker (100 Black). To add depth I edged the mouth with Aged Mahogany Distress ink and created lip cracks with a painty twin paint marker.
To create even more depth to the mouth I cut the elastic edging off of an old fitted bed sheet. The strips of white bed sheet were then dyed with Dylusions Spray ink (Citrus). *Since it was a really old bed sheet some of the elastic came loose so I hot glued pipe cleaners to the insides of those pieces.
Adhere your Mouth, Lips, and Teeth to your Chompy with Hot Glue starting with the mouth. *You will need to cut a slit in the side of the mouth to adhere it to the curved surface. Add “Gums” to your Chompy teeth with Stickles or Glitter glue.
These Chompies are ready for action! They don’t know it yet, but they will be seeing a LOT of it next week! I have a ton of games planned that involve hurling Skylander themed weapons at the Chompies.
Start getting your Chompies ready for battle and I’ll be back with more tutorials on how to create “weapons” and games to defeat them a little later.
Benjamin is not a fan of his “Brother’s” not so cute make over…he’s rather terrified of him now
See you soon!
