How to Make Tim Holtz Hanging Sign Cake Toppers

by Amy Bowerman

Hello friends!  Today I have a fun tutorial for you where I am going to show you how to make cake toppers using the Tim Holtz Hanging Sign die from Sizzix.  I first made these Cake toppers for my sister’s Elephant Baby Shower.  When my friend Kathia from Pink Little Cake (she makes the most amazing cakes and cookies) asked me to recreate them for her daughter’s 1st Birthday I was able to take the proper photos for a tutorial.  Come along and I will show you how to make these adorable Hanging Sign Cake Toppers for your next Birthday Party, Baby Shower, or Bash.

This is not a difficult project but it is supply heavy so be ready to hit Jo-ann’s or Michael’s when Ranger Ink products are on sale.  These are great tools to have on hand anyway.  Do I sound like a Ranger Ink cheer leader?  Sorry, I’ll put down my pom-pom  (for now) :)

STEP 1)  Die Cut Grunge Board Using the Tim Holtz Alterations Hanging Sign Die (Sizzix).  *You can use Chip board but in my personal experience Grunge Board is the way to go.  It is sturdier and pretty much MADE for Distress Stain.  Color your sign Pieces with Distress Stains. * I used Walnut Stain for the wrought iron bars and Picket Fence and Vintage Photo for the signs (you may need more than one coat).

STEP 2) Create Letter Tiles for your signs.  You can create your letter tiles anyway you wish.  My go to lettering set is the “Fanciful Swirls Alphabet” from Hero Arts. I stamped with Archival Ink (Sepia) and edged with Vintage Photo Distress ink.  The Lettering was framed with Core’dinations card stock from the Tim Holtz/Ranger Distress Collection.  A Tim Holtz Paper Distresser was used to rough up the edges and prepare them for ink (Pumice Stone Distress Ink).

STEP 3) Creating Stamped embellishments for hanging signs.  For this step you will be using Grunge Paper.  Grunge Paper is sturdy like Grunge Board but thinner and lighter.  I mounted a piece of vintage lined paper to the grunge paper with Mod Podge.  Using the Hero Arts “Elephants”  set I stamped my images with Ranger Archival ink (Sepia).

STEP 4) Assemble Hanging Signs.  To cover any bits of grunge board not colored by the Distress Stain use Distress inks in coordinating colors.  For the White sign I used Pumice Stone and the Wrought Iron Bars and Brown Sign were edged with Vintage Photo.  Lay out your letter tiles and stamped images the way you want them and adhere (I like Beacon 3 in 1 adhesive).  Attach your signs with jump rings then hot glue to a wooden skewer.

Hanging Sign Cake toppers make it easy to create a personalized display for your dessert table.  Plus, it encourages the use of multiple cakes.  I ALWAYS encourage the use of multiple cakes!  Variety is the spice of life!

Now that my cake toppers were ready to go, all I needed was a box to ship them in.  A few weeks ago I showed you how to turn Shipping Boxes into Gift Boxes.  Well, I have one more method to add to that list…

While you have your stamps out, grab a paper bag, cut it into strips and stamp.  I stamped  4 strips to cover up the Amazon logo on all 4 sides of my box.  Instead of Mod Podge I ran my stamped paper bag strips through my Xyron Creatopia.  All I had to do was peel, stick, and smooth with a brayer and my box was good to go!

It took less than 10 minutes to customize this box.  It’s much nicer to come home to a box like this on your doorstep don’t you think?

I’ll be updating this post next week with pictures from the party and Kathia’s amazing cakes so stay tuned!

In the meantime go have some cake!

These cake toppers are fantastic! These look like they will be the perfect addition to the awesome cakes you referenced above. And I agree with the previous commenter who said she’d put them on her pancakes! Not that I eat pancakes for breakfast… Maybe I’d have them sticking out of my tea mug? You get the idea: I agree that these are super adorable!
