Easter Bunny Tree with Ribbon Flowers

by Amy Bowerman

That old Peter Cottontail is hopping down the bunny trail with a quickness!  Easter IS certainly on its way.  I’ve prepared for the arrival of “the bunny” by consuming copious amounts of Cadbury eggs and creating this Easter Bunny tree.

Easter Bunny Tree | @PluckingDaisy #RangerInk #Sizzix #EasterDIY This project was inspired by Tim Holtz 12 Tags of 2013 {March} and Ranger Ink’s March Color Palette Challenge.  I couldn’t contain myself after seeing Tim’s March Tag technique and I started multiple projects which eventually became this Easter Bunny tree!

Easter Bunny Tree | @PluckingDaisy #RangerInk #Sizzix #EasterDIY I’ll be sharing tutorials on how I created all the components for my Easter Bunny tree over the next few days.  First, I’m going to show you how to make ribbon flowers for your Easter Decor…or your Easter Bonnet if you like “Frills upon it”. :)

Make an Easter Bunny Tree with Ribbon Flowers

While wandering around the thrift store the other day I spied this sad sack of an Easter Tree sitting on the shelf.  Even with its peeling tape and missing flowers I knew I could fix it.  As I said to myself (in my best Charlie Brown voice)  “I’ll take this little tree home and decorate it…all it needs is a little love.”

Easter Bunny Tree | @PluckingDaisy #RangerInk #Sizzix #EasterDIY Waiting in the wings when the Charlie Brown Easter tree and I arrived home was this Bunny Candle from my G-ma that I have been unable to find a use for…until now!

Easter Bunny Tree | @PluckingDaisy #RangerInk #Sizzix #EasterDIY I dismantled the Charlie Brown Easter Tree from its base and carved a hole into the bunny candle…what do you know a PERFECT fit! (With a little help from my friend Mr. Hot Glue Gun)

Now that I had a tree and a base it was time to get this little Easter tree blooming again with some fresh Ribbon Flowers!

How to Make Ribbon Flowers

After several failed ribbon flower attempts while making my girlfriends Paper Flower Wedding Centerpiece I had quite a few organza ribbon scraps lying around the studio.  They may not have worked for the wedding centerpiece but they were PERFECT for my Easter Bunny Tree!

Dying Ribbon Flowers

STEP 1:  Stiffen Ribbon or Fabric by applying a coat of Mod Podge Stiffy.

*TIP* If you don’t have organza you can also use Dryer Sheets!

Easter Bunny Tree | @PluckingDaisy #RangerInk #Sizzix #EasterDIY

STEP 2:  When Mod Podge is Dry Dye ribbon with Distress Stains.  I used Spun Sugar, Broken China, Picket Fence and Iced Spruce (for Leaves)

Die Cutting Ribbon Flowers

STEP 1: Die Cut Flowers by folding ribbon into thirds and placing over the smallest flower on the Tim Holtz Tattered Florals Sizzix die.

STEP 2: Create leaves by die cutting a section of the Sizzix Branch with leaves die (This is one of my FAVORITE Sizzix dies)

Assembling Ribbon Flowers

If you were scared away by the wiring intensive Paper Hydrangea Tutorial (I don’t blame you)….this is a MUCH easier method!

STEP 1:  Cut a small piece of 26 gauge floral wire and dip one end into Glossy Accents.

*TIP*  Use the cap of a water bottle for easy dipping!

STEP 2:  Add a pearl or small bead to the end.  Allow to dry.

*TIP*  Stick your wire stems in foam to dry

STEP 3:  Pierce Ribbon Flowers with Tim Holtz Alterations Die Pick and adhere to pearl stems with Glossy Accents.  Clamp with a clothes pin and allow to dry.

STEP 4:  Once Glossy Accents are dry add dimension to your flowers by flipping upside down and gently hit them with a heat gun.

Attaching Ribbon Flowers

STEP 1:  Wrap wire stem around Easter Tree branch

Easter Bunny Tree | @PluckingDaisy #RangerInk #Sizzix #EasterDIY STEP 2:  Stretch wrap with floral tape

Easter Bunny Tree | @PluckingDaisy #RangerInk #Sizzix #EasterDIY Thanks for joining me on another flower making adventure today.  Hopefully the Easter Bunny will appreciate this Easter Bunny tree and leave me some Cadbury Eggs…I’m running low.

Stay tuned for these upcoming Tutorials!

My take on Tim Holtz 12 Tags of 2013 March Tag {Coming Soon!}

I can’t wait to share my take on Tim’s March tag!  I had to get creative and improvise a bit as I did not have some of the supplies *wink-wink, nudge-nudge Easter Bunny!*   I’m especially excited to show you how I created the Easter Bunny :)  Can you guess what he’s made out of?
