Decorate a Plastic Tea Set for a Tea Party

by Amy Bowerman

Hi there!  I’ve got a really fun kids craft tutorial to share with you today.  While I was working on this tea set for my Altered Alice project (final reveal coming soon) I thought, “Hey this would be a fun craft for a little girls tea party!”  Adults will enjoy this project just as much…I mean I’m an adult and I sure had fun making it (just sayin’).  Let’s put the kettle on, fetch some crumpets and I’ll show you how to decorate a tea set for your next Tea Party.

My son and I went to Toys R’ Us to shop for a Halloween costume and I saw this plastic tea-set in the dollar section.  I can’t resist those Dollar Deals so I grabbed a few sets to alter.  For $1 you can get a set for each child to alter/decorate their own tea set.  What little girl (young or old) wouldn’t love that?  Personally, I still have fond memories of a Tea Party I attended as a child where we decorated doll sized straw hats.  Had we decorated tea-sets I would have been even more over joyed.

To give your plain plastic Tea-set a little extra pizzazz spray with Mod Podge Pearl Glaze. *You will need to do this pre-party. Look at that lovely sheen!  I didn’t think it was possible for me to love Mod Podge anymore than I already do…until they came out with pearl glaze.   I love all things shiny and sparkly especially when they come in a spray can!

Now comes the fun part…Decorating!   Set out bowls of glitter (I used Martha Stewart glitter) and use Mod Podge and foam brushes to “Paint” the areas you want to glitter.  Then dip them in the bowls.  Add Detailing with Stickles and Enamel Accents.  *For a kid’s tea party you can also use puffy paint and glitter glue.

You can let the kids make their own stickers with the Xyron Create a sticker.  I have three different sizes of Xyron sticker machines and love them all.  Not to mention that they have gained me instant popularity and notoriety with my son’s classmates.  Actual Conversation over heard on playground : Kid A -“Did you know Jack’s Mom has a sticker machine?”  Kid B – “Whoa!  That is so cool!!”

In short the Xyron sticker machine is pretty much the holy grail of crafting with kids.  This particular machine is about $10 and sure to please the birthday girl or boy.

For my stickers I used Danita Wonderland Stamps from Crescendoh.  (The images were leftover from the Striped Drawer on my Alice in Wonderland Dresser).  You can have the kids stamp and color images, use their own artwork, or if they are old enough to use scissors have them cut images from magazines and thrift store children’s books to make stickers.

Most of the rhinestones and gems used on my tea set were found in the Dollar section at Michael’s.  Some of them were self stick but I used Glossy Accents to adhere everything just to be sure.

This was a lot of fun to make.  If you plan on having some tea-set decorating fun at your next tea party be sure to start early on to allow for drying time.

Before I go, here are a few other Tea-Party Ideas for your inspiration…

Kelly Tea will be served at 3 pm sharp! The white rabbit is sure to be late so we can amuse ourselves by talking about craftiness with extended pinkies :)

Well Sharul you know what they say, “Ask and you shall receive” I’m sending you an email now about the tea cups. I just cannot justify letting them sit in my stash waiting for “Someday” when you already have a plan for them :) Wish I could send you some nice fall leaves too but I doubt I could get them through customs…but I’ll loook into it!
