If you can use a hole punch you are on your way to creating custom guitar picks with the Pick Punch!  It cuts through a variety of thick materials like packaging plastic, old credit or gift cards, and even metal!  Can’t wait to get your hands on this super cool musical tool?  You can find your Pick Punch HERE.  But don’t stop there!  Uncommon Goods has unique gifts for anyone and everyone like the Aquafarm (a fish tank that grows herbs WHAT?!?…I know coolness!)  and Kinetic Sand where you can make amazing sand sculptures with no trip to the beach required!  This is something to get very excited about if you are an irish lass like me :)

How cool is that?   With a Pick Punch you can recycle packaging plastic and unused “Jelly of the Month Club” gift cards into custom guitar picks.  This will be music to your ears…and the planet’s :)

Check out these easy ideas for creating custom guitar picks with your Pick Punch…

Packaging Plastic Guitar Picks

When it comes to choosing the right packaging plastic for creating guitar picks the thicker the better.  I call this “Government Plastic” (civilians can’t buy it).  If it  takes all your might and makes you mutter four letter words when trying to get whatever is enclosed in it out then you’ve found the perfect guitar pick making plastic!  (Electronics and batteries are often packaged in this type of plastic)

Cover your packaging plastic with decorative tape or stickers to create cool custom picks.  I used Negative film strip tape from Industrial Chic to create these scenic picks.

Flip your Pick Punch over to make sure your image is lined up the way you want it before punching.

Using Alcohol Inks is a quick and easy way to add blended color to packaging plastic picks.  They are available in over 28 colors and can be combined  for a truly endless amount of customizable color.  Not only that , but Alcohol inks dry in seconds allowing you to become a colorful guitar pick making machine!

Stamp over your colored picks with Black Archival Ink for an even more customized  look.

Metal Guitar Picks

Yup, you heard that right.  Pick Punch cuts through metal!  I used scrap sheet metal for my pick but you can find metal stamping  blanks at most craft store.

Hammer your metal pick to add texture.

Stamp it with Archival ink or Metal stamps to add sentiments and imagery.  Want a colored metal pick?  Just add alcohol ink!

Credit/Gift Card Guitar Picks

Here’s a unique way to curb spending, turn your credit cards into guitar picks and strum your way to financial freedom!  Or just use an expired card like I did.

Gift cards and Hotel room key cards work just as well for pick punching.  Commemorate each stop on tour with a Guitar pick from the Holiday Inn the Ritz and beyond!  Bring your Pick Punch along and autograph Punched Picks for fans at your next show!

If you have an old license or ID card lying around Punch a truly unique-to-you pick of your likeness.  I’m sure my BIL will be pleased as “punch” with this custom “pick” of his younger self.

Hi. Sorry if this sounds dumb. lol Are you sticking that film strip tape to the packaging plastic, then cutting? Just wondering how durable it is. And, where would I find this tape? I just love this idea! I’m trying to find something new to do, and I never even knew this was a possibility! Never knew there was such a thing as a pic punch. Thanks in advance!

9 Amy Bowerman December 11, 2013 at 7:45 pm

Hey Luanne,

Not dumb at all! Some stickers are stronger than others and this is one of them so yes you can cut through the sticker after it’s on the plastic. I found the tape at Michaels on clearance it’s Industrial Chic (Jewelry section). You can get the same effect with packing tape just place the tape over an image, smooth out any air bubbles and soak it in water till you can rub the paper off. Once you rub the paper off set it to dry and the stickiness comes back. If it’s not sticky enough a few drops of Glossy Accents will do the trick (you can find glossy accents from Ranger Ink at most craft stores)

Duck Brand Duck tape has a ton of prints and patterns on their tape now…I’m working on a few Duck Tape picks to add to the collection :)

Hope this helps!

OMGosh, seriously! You come up with the MOST creative ideas! Your custom guitar picks are brilliant, Amy! Seriously brilliant! And so much fun. Really love the photo one you made from an old id. What a cool gift!
And you make me laugh about the Rainbow Unicorn and the “government plastic”! Happy pre-birthday to you! :)

Thanks Audrey! That Unicorn Mug WILL be mine! I’m convinced that it will give me magical powers and i’ll probably start putting glitter in my coffee instead of sugar for maximum effect.

“Government Plastic” is no match for me and my secret weapon…Tonic scissors!

This is great! My husband is a musician and a punch like this would be so much fun to have! You examples are inspiring as well. Awhile back I found an Etsy site called “StampingBlanks” that has metal blank picks and I got some of those to alcohol ink. It’s fun! Now I am going to have to get this punch at some point.

13 Amy Bowerman December 8, 2013 at 2:35 pm

Thanks Shauna the Pick Punch Rocks! Your hubs will LOVE it! My BIL is the youth music director at church and gives guitar lessons to many of the youth group kids so I’m sure he will be pick punching up a storm. My friends boyfriend is in an up and coming band and he brings his pick punch on tour.

I had no idea they sold Guitar pick stamping blanks how cool!
