Create Custom Tissue Paper with Packaging Supplies

by Amy Bowerman

I have been on a MAJOR up-cycling kick lately.  I’ve always been a fan of reducing and re-using but as of late I’ve really been on a roll!  DH and I have tried to buckle down and sock some serious money away to buy our dream house.  The two of us have had to make sacrifices.  What’s my sacrifice?  Crafty spending sprees at Michael’s.

Cutting back on what I spend on craft supplies has helped me look at crafting with new eyes.  Instead of saying “I need that to make this,” I’m saying to myself “How can I use this to make something with what I already have?”  It’s been a fun challenge and there have been some serious artistic sparks and a bit of glitter flying around my studio!  I’m on fire!…but in a good way :)

Today I’m going to show you how to create your own custom tissue paper using a variety of packaging supplies, including the tissue paper itself!  You can create custom tissue paper in minutes and use it for gifts, wrapping paper, and mixed media projects.

Look familiar?  If you’ve been to the mall or a gift shop recently you probably have one (or more) of these shopping bags lying around.  Harvest that plain, old white tissue and let’s dress it up!  While you’re at it, go ahead and save the bag too.  I’ll have a tutorial coming up soon on how to turn that brand name shopping bag into a lovely gift bag.

How to Create Custom Tissue Paper

Rainbow Tissue Paper

I LOVE Dylusions Spray inks!  The colors are so vibrant and the spray bottles make it easy to add bright color to pretty much anything!  To create the rainbow tissue paper simply smooth out a few pieces of white tissue paper and use a piece of cardboard as a guide to keep your lines straight. When your done mist the tissue paper with Perfect Pearls mist and hang it up to dry.

Large Dot Tissue Paper

For the large dot printed Tissue Paper spray a piece of bubble wrap with Dylusions spray inks.  Flip the bubble wrap and press.  Wallah!  now you’ve got a bright and graphic design!

Small Dot Tissue Paper

For a more condensed design spray a piece of small bubble wrap with Dylusions spray ink and stamp around the tissue with an open palm.  Re-apply ink as needed

Mesh Printed Tissue Paper

For this print lay a mesh produce bag on your tissue paper and spray dylusions over it.  For a lighter more defined pattern flip the mesh bag over and use a brayer for an even print.  Repeat this pattern with different colors of dylusions until your tissue is covered.

Once your custom tissue paper creations are dry (5-10 min) you’ll have some lovely wrap for gifts or mixed media projects.  You can also use stencils or even stamps to create custom tissue.

Who knew recycling packaging could be so easy, fun and most of all functional!  This custom tissue would be the perfect complement to a recycled cardboard gift box.  If you missed that tutorial you can check it out HERE.  I’ll have some more projects coming up made from the recycled tissue and other recycled materials so stay tuned for that!

Here are a few of my projects made with Dylusions with tutorials so you can see why I love them so much :)

Have a bright and colorful day!

PS If you are wondering where to get Dylusions I buy them from Linda at the Funkie Junkie *

*I am not affiliated with the Funkie Junkie or Dylusions I just love the product and Linda’s shop for her prices and fast shipping.

Hi Amy. Can you tell me which Dylusions you used for the rainbow?
Thanks! Nadja

Hi Nadja!

I used Bubblegum Pink, Squeezed Orange, Lemon Zest, Cut Grass, London Blue and Crushed Grape for the Rainbow. A mix of the same colors were used for the other designs as well.

Have fun!

Beautiful, simply beautiful!!!!!!
I am having a hard time finding a site that has most of the colors of Perfect Pearls.
I am sure there is a site with all colors but, I want various colors and can’t find what I want.
You noticed that I said WANT not NEED!!! lol

Not only does the “new” tissue paper look great, but it looks like you must have had lots of fun making it too! Love the sprays! 😉
