Collage Art for Baby

by Amy Bowerman

I drew my inspiration for this project from all over the map.  First and foremost the base of my design was inspired by this trigger photo from Cath at Moxie Fab

lovely as a lullaby

Lovely as a Lullaby

The whole lullaby thing really got me thinking baby so I put together a collage.

Dream a little dream

I really liked the fluffy soft look of the blankets in the trigger photo and wanted to include soft colors and soft fabrics in my design.  The lace layered under the patterned paper and velvet ribbons in the top right corner were vintage beauties I had in my stash.

My second source of inspiration came from the current challenge over at the Kraft Journal.  For this challenge we need to use something old and something new.  Since I was already going with a lullaby theme I knew I had to use the vintage children’s song book I picked up at a tag sale last week.  When I bought it I thought it was a little pricey for a tag sale.  I mean 4 dollars for an old book…but whatever I’m not a haggler so I paid the lady and went on my way.  Much to my surprise as I was tearing pages out for this baby art collage  I happened to notice the copyright date….1907….whoopsie….guess I can call that my old piece.

Something REALLY old

Ancient Lullaby

Ancient lullaby is right…hope I didn’t destroy a priceless antique.  For my New I used the layers of patterned paper from KCompany Hopscotch Boy stack.  I also used a new bird stamp from Ink-a-dink-a-doo…oh how happy I was to get back to the birds.  The flying bird has shown up before on this gift tag….but his songbird buddy had not seen any ink until today.

How to Make a Baby Art Collage

Step 1:

Start with a piece of Kraft card stock trimmed to fit an 8 X 10 shadow box frame.  I used the Batik resist technique from Tim Holtz…again…I just love this technique so much I can’t quit doing it!

Step 1: Background

The background was repeatedly stamped with a sheet music stamp in Weathered Wood Distress ink and embossed with Ranger Fine Detail Clear embossing powder.  The edges of the page were inked with Antique Linen and Tea Dye Distress Ink.  After inking the entire piece was ironed to melt the embossing powder.  I then stamped the edges using a golden oldie rubber stamp “Starry Night” from Rubber Stampede in Broken China and Faded Jeans Distress ink.  To give the starry edges a little twinkle I brushed them with Turquoise and Blue Patina Perfect Pearls and misted the whole page with Frost mist from Tsukineko.

Step 2: Layers of Patterned paper and old lace

Step 2:

Cut snippets of patterned paper and distress edges to add depth.  To create an extra layer of softness  add scraps of lace underneath.  to *Play around with the design a bit before gluing it down to make sure it looks the way you want it.

Step 3:

Add embelishments.  For my project I stamped the Stars and birds on grunge paper covered with vintage notebook paper.  The images were colored with distress inks and perfect pearls.  I popped everything up on mounting squares to add dimension.

 Step 4:

Stamp a piece of ribbon and attach to collage with decorative brads.  Embellish with pearls.

Now you are ready to display your Baby Art Collage in a Shadow Box Frame!  This project would make a lovely baby shower gift to be used as a wall hanging in the nursery!

Thanks for stopping by! Have a lovely day :)
