Chicken Soup for the Crafty Soul

by Amy Bowerman

Hello dear readers and friends!  As 2012 comes to a close I’d like to share what I’ve been “cooking” up for the past year.  The weather outside IS frightful today but don’t worry I have a nice pot of “Chicken Soup” ready to feed your crafty soul!

Chicken Soup for the Crafty Soul | @PluckingDaisy

2012 was a year filled with new discoveries, opportunities and great friends.  I celebrated my one year “Blog-a-versary” in May and as I look back on my journey I am amazed and humbled at how far I have come and how much I have learned.  I’m so happy to be able to share my creative journey with you.  Here’s  a look back at some of my favorite projects and creative discoveries of 2012.

It’s no secret that I LOVE to make flowers.  I discovered lots of new ways to make flowers this year.  Although paper flowers are my specialty I pushed myself to think of other materials besides paper to make flowers.  It wasn’t long before my creativity started “Flowering” and new blooms were made from Dryer Sheets, Cellophane bags, and even an old Slip n’ slide!  I also experimented with dying flowers from my garden and silk blooms from the dollar store.

 Art Journaling

What else did I discover in 2012?  Art Journaling!  Thanks to inspiration from my friend Marjie Kemper and Julie Fei-Fan Balzer from Art Journal Everyday I jumped in with both feet to this fabulous art form!  If you are on the fence about embarking on an Art Journal Journey, I urge you to take the plunge!  The water is just fine!  One of my goals for 2013 is to Art Journal even more.

Here’s a look at my first attempt at Art Journaling.  I created a story book using images from The Octopode Factory.  Check out the links below for full tutorials on how to create these pages.

 Dylusions Spray Inks

I’m a huge fan of Ranger Ink products and Dylusions Spray inks are no exception.  These magical sprays have opened new doors to creative possibilities I never dreamed possible (Thanks again to Marjie Kemper for showing me the wonderful world of Dylusions!)

Alcohol Ink

Alcohol Ink is another of my favorite Ranger goodies.  This versatile ink makes it easy to add vibrant color to non-porous surfaces.  This past year I really pushed the envelope by trying it out on some very interesting surfaces…like an old shower curtain :)

I created my first roundup with the Alcohol Ink projects of crafty friends and other creative  folks from around the web.  Check out the Things to Make with Alcohol Ink roundup here.  My Alcohol Ink projects are listed below.  Since Santa brought me a bunch of new Alcohol Ink colors I’m hoping to add more projects to this list in 2013!

Alice in Wonderland

Yeah, I’m kind of a Wonderland nut.  One of my biggest projects of 2012 was my Alice in Wonderland Dresser.  I still have some finishing touches to add and I’m hoping to finish if for good in 2013.

Take a walk with me through Wonderland and check out all of my Alice themed projects below.  It’s nearly tea-time so don’t be late!

Skylanders Party

Planning my sons 7th Birthday was another big accomplishment for me.  It took 6 weeks to plan and create but the end results were unforgettable.  Oh how my heart did a happy dance when his friends Mom told me that her son “Talked about that party for DAYS!”

Skylanders Party Ideas | @PluckingDaisy #skylanders #Party

In the beginning I doubted that I would be able to pull this party off.  It was a lesson in perseverance for me for sure.

 The Tree of Life

One of my most memorable and recent projects is this memorial tree.  This tree of life was created in remembrance of the 26 victims in the Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting.  My family and I gathered around it on Christmas Ever after lighting 26 candles and prayed for each one that was lost that day.

One of the best part of 2012 for me was the wonderful people I met and friends I have made on this creative journey.  I’d love for you to meet them too!

First up,  my sweet friend Johnnie from Saved By Love Creations!  She has taught me more than she may know this past year and I’m so thankful to have met her over our shared love for paper flowers.  She’s always there to offer a word of advice or encouragement and remind me to “Just Keep Swimming!”

Johnnie is the Queen of Round ups and an avid flower maker herself.  It doesn’t stop there…Johnnie has a plethora of creative ideas to share.  Far too many for just one blog!  Stop by  Saved By Love Creations, Totally Green Crafts, and Printable Decor  and you will see what I’m talking about.

Next my friend and fellow “crazy cat lady in training” Laura from The Shed.  Laura and I share funny cat pictures with each other about as much as we share craft projects.  C’mon you know there’s nothing funnier than funny Cat pictures!  Be sure to stop by The Shed for a creative mojo boost.  If you like vintage Laura’s Etsy Shop is a must see!  Her Vintage inspired handmade cards are out of this world!

Speaking of creative Mojo, my blog buddy  Shahrul of Such Pretty Canvas has more creativity in her little finger than I would know what to do with!  Shahrul is an  Art Journaling extraordinaire.  Her Journal pages and up-cycled projects are a sheer delight and will inspire you in ways that words cannot describe!  Shahrul leaves me lots of bloggy love and a visit to her blog always results in me running to my studio to get creative.  Stop by Such Pretty Canvas today it will make you want to create!

Jan, the Alaskan Lovely behind Far North Designs is another blogging buddy of mine you will want to check out.  Jan has some very cool mixed media and card making tricks up her sleeve that are not to be missed!  Stop by Far North Designs to see for yourself.

Last but certainly NOT least is Renee of Scissortail Songs.  Renee’s witty writing style is as creative as her art projects.  I stop by her blog when I need a smile and she does not disappoint.  Stop by Scissortail Songs I guarantee you will leave grinning…even giggling…from ear to ear.

Play the Music that your Soul wants to Hear

I hope you enjoyed your bowl of “Chicken Soup.”  We have feasted on a years worth of creative projects, discoveries and met new friends.  So what’s in store for 2013?  I hope the same thing happens in 2013  that happened in 2012…More learning, more growing, more new friends, more discoveries.  I suppose I need to come up with a resolution in addition to these things eh?  Well here it is.  Much like the above stamped sentiment, in 2013 I want to Create what my soul wants to create.  Creating is my music and it feeds my soul.  In 2013 I want to feed my soul lots and lots of Crafty Chicken Soup :)

Have a soulful day!
