Bird Cage Card

by Amy Bowerman

Wow not one but two bird card posts in one day!!  I’ve been a busy bee this week…er bird…and I wasn’t about to kill/combine two bird cards with one post (I slay me…LOL!!).  I almost ran out of time for this weeks Tuesday Trigger...even after the deadline was extended.  This was a tough one for me.  Here is the inspirational photo…

Merci Card

This card was designed by Tina Fussel and is featured in Stamp It! magazine.  I was wracking my brain trying to come up with a card concept without replicating Tina’s design.  I knew I wanted to use  key elements like the doily and some of the shapes and colors but I kept coming up empty with design ideas.  I needed to switch gears and refocus so I dug through my vintage card collection hoping for an idea to spark.  After substantial digging and rummaging I came across this vintage Anniversary card which helped to “trigger” my design.

Vintage Anniversary

I absolutely loved the color and texture of this card and since I’m on a bird card kick I was powerless to resist these charming beauties.  Here is my card inspired by not one card but two…one old…one new…(had to get my Seuss on for a second there) :)

Something old = Something new

I cut the birdcage portion out and while cutting noticed that the blue was a close match to the blue strip in Tina’s card.  I stamped the strips with silver pigment ink and embossed them.  I’m not big on doilies but  when I found the anniversary card this doily fell out of it…talk about a sign!!  It has to be at least 50 years old!  I inherited these cards from a family friend who passed away a few years ago at 93.  The doily was a handmade Mother’s day card from her son…now in his late 60’s.  I used it to create a table top for the birdcage to rest on.

Fields of Gold

I loved the look of the vase of flowers in the inspirational photo so I used the background floral stamp (from ditto) to pull in that element.  I embossed them in gold to play off the gold in the birdcage (I rarely use gold….I’ve had that embossing powder for probably 20 years…no joke).  Originally, I wanted this to be a Thank you card but just couldn’t get the composition right with the Thank-you stamps I had.  The inspire stamp is another new dollar stamp…and happens to be my absolute favorite word in the English language!  Since my card was inspired by two other artist’s beautiful cards I had to use it…and I LOVE it!!  I think it works really well with the space.

Create

I added the second sentiment to balance the space on the doily.  This is from Hero Arts “From the Heart” set….love this set…one of my favorites.  It couldn’t be more perfect to complement the “Inspire” stamp….like I always say, “Inspire to create, create to inspire!”  I stamped directly on the doily which I was pretty sure would end in disaster but low and behold…it worked!!  I added the gold and silver starburst as a finishing touch!

On that note I’ll leave you with a little poem I wrote for a dear friend who has inspired me creatively more than she could ever know:

Inspire

Inspire because you do.

Inspire because you are you.

Be inspired,

Because you inspire others.

Love how you stamped the sentiment directly on the doily-and it’s the embossing.

Really great card, Amy! I just love how you combined two different cards for your design, and I love the vintage elements that you used. That anniversary card and old doily are just lovely. the stamped flowers and your sentiments are the perfect partners. :)
