Art Journaling with Dina Wakley

by Amy Bowerman

Hello creative friends!  I had a wonderful day yesterday Art Journaling with Dina Wakley at the Papercraft Clubhouse here in Connecticut.  It was an afternoon filled with laughter and creative learning.  I learned more in 3 hours then I could have learned in a year by trying to “do it myself” with online videos and such.  There is something to be said about hands on learning and instruction from another artist in a room filled with other creatives.  That kind of creative energy just can’t be recreated online but I’ll do my best to bring you a few glimpses of what I experienced in Dina Wakley’s Art Journal class.

First off I highly recommend taking one of Dina Wakley’s classes when the opportunity arises.  Dina is a wonderful teacher and I thoroughly enjoyed being brought into her colorful world and creative process.  I’m drawn to artists who use color in unique ways.  I love a technique based class that allows me to explore my personal style in new ways as opposed to creating a finished project.  Dina’s class was all of that and then some!   Not only did I learn new techniques and approaches to creating I also learned how to incorporate some colorful new products I had never used before, including Dina Wakley’s new Media paint line with Ranger Ink!

Don’t you just love this color palette?  I’m a sucker for bright, bold colors and Dina’s Media line speaks to my color loving soul!  My top picks (if I were FORCED to choose) are Sky, Turquoise, Magenta and Night.

The other day I shared Altered Jar I created for my friend Suzanne (aka @concernedowl).  Suzanne came to class with a package full of surprises for me including my kryptonite Cadbury Mini Eggs!  A friend with chocolate is a friend indeed :)

Dina taught us all about working backwards, in addition to new techniques and products unfamiliar to me like Gelatos, Pan Pastels, and Neo Color Crayons.

This page was my first Foray into the world of Neo Color Crayons and Dina Wakley Media paints.  Turquoise and Sky make for a beautiful painted background and Neo Color Crayons are just plain fun!  Luckily Suzanne is a girl after my own heart and likes to use “every crayon in the box”.  She had a big ol’ bag of Neo Color crayons which she was kind enough to share :)

Now this is not my favorite page but we can’t always create masterpieces.  As Dina so eloquently put it “They’ll make more paper.”  Dina also said that “Art Journaling is about trying new things and experimenting, Discovering what works and what doesn’t.”  This didn’t work obviously but I wanted to show you some of Dina’s new paints in action.  I’m not nuts about this page but I LOVE the color combination of Turquoise, Magenta and Night!

This page has a bit of everything on it and is my favorite page I created in class yesterday.  From Dylusions, to Pan Pastel, Gelato, Media (Night), and a bit of Neo Color for good measure, this page has it!

Art Journaling with Dina Wakley | Pluckingdaisies.com This morning I added some stamping and journaling to tie everything together.  Kind of like the “rug’ from the Big Lebowski :)  This statement couldn’t be more true.  Time DOES fly when you create art with friends!  Three hours went by in a blink as I happily created with another creative friend.  When Dina Wakley comes to your town be sure to bring a friend to embark on a wonderful Art Journal adventure with you…you’ll be glad you did!

What fun! I saw Diana’s Media colors online the other day and fell IN LOVE! I also love my pan pastels and gelatos. I’ve been using them for a couple of years now and The Faber Castell page has fantastic tutorials each week for the gelato’s and other products that all work perfectly together. Thanks for passing on all your projects and ideas!
