Art Journal Pop-up Book

by Amy Bowerman

Ah Art Journaling.  It’s just plain FUN isn’t it?   Since I have run out of pages in my Octopode Factory Storybook/Art Journal I’ve been going back over previous pages trying to find creative ways to add text and interactive features.  My latest obsession has been movable parts.  Even in adulthood I can’t resist a book with movable parts.  Pop-up books have always been a favorite of mine.   I’ve finally figured out a way to create a pop-up book feature for an art journal where you don’t have to learn origami!  It’s easy to do so come along and find out how!

No fancy paper-folding skills required for this pop-up book trick.  The secret is probably in your stash of craft supplies for kids :)

How to make a Pop-up Book Feature for an Art Journal

First, You will need to find and color an image for your Pop-up feature.  I have used the newly released Steampunk Sun from The Octopode Factory (Isn’t She Gorgeous!?!?).

STEP 1)  Color the backside (textured) of a piece of Grunge Board with Dylusions Spray Inks and use a heat gun to blend and set your ink.

STEP 2) Stamp and emboss your Dylusions Colored Background with a background stamp.  *I have used Stampers Anonymous Grunge Cirque set with Gold Embossing powder.

STEP 3)  Adhere your Copic Colored image to the front (smooth) side of your Grunge Board with Mod Podge.  *Gelly roll pens were used to accent the Copic coloring.

STEP 4) Cut out image with Tonic Scissors.  * Nothing cuts Grunge…or pretty much anything else better than Tonic Scissors.

*Grunge Board is super sturdy but also a bit on the heavy side.  Depending on the size of your image you may need to double or even triple up on pipe cleaners for support.

STEP 5)  Hot Glue the end of a Pipe Cleaner to the back of  your image.  *Adjust strength and size by wrapping wire and pipe cleaners together.

STEP 6)  Create a Spiral by wrapping a portion of the length of pipe cleaner around your fingers.

STEP 7)  Hot Glue End of Pipe Cleaner to inside seam of book.  * I just may grow back my fingerprints thanks to these new finger protecting nibs from Mod Podge.  No more Glue gun burns HOORAY!

Pipe Cleaners aren’t just for kids anymore!  I love the way the steam punk sun literally “Pops” off the page!  The tin foil pipe cleaner adds to the effect and fits in seamlessly with the brightly colored sun.

When you’ve finished admiring your new Pop-up book creation simply tuck it back to where you want it and close the book.  Don’t worry the spiral will bounce right back once you open the book up again :)  I left my pop-up book feature just peeking out the side of my art journal.  Art journals should “Ooze” fun and this will do the trick!

Hope you will “Pop” over to TOFF to see all the fun popping-up over there and Art Journal Everyday for even more art journaling inspiration!

Love your Octopode Journal! Never thought of using pipe cleaners for pop-ups! I did a kids craft session this summer with pop up book, I was really worried it would be too complicated but they so got it it was a great success. I may do it again and this is a great alternative idea. TFS. Cindy x

Shahrul I cannot wait to see what “pops” up in one of YOUR journal pages! I’m so sorry to here about your tech troubles I wish I could offer helpful advice but I am severely tech impaired. At the very least I’m glad I made you smile :) Big hugs to you and I hope everything gets back to normal soon!
