Alice in Wonderland Art Tree

by Amy Bowerman

“`Off with her head!’ the Queen shouted at the top of her voice.
Nobody moved. `Who cares for you?’ said Alice, (she had grown to her full size by this time.) `You’re nothing but a pack of cards!’
At this the whole pack rose up into the air, and came flying down upon her: she gave a little scream, half of fright and half of anger, and tried to beat them off, and found herself lying on the bank, with her head in the lap of her sister, who was gently brushing away some dead leaves that had fluttered down from the trees upon her face.”
— Chapter 12, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

Autumn in Wonderland

I wonder if the Wonderland story took place in the Fall of the year? Autumn has arrived in the northern hemisphere.  Just as Alice recognized the court characters as playing cards, the trees are losing their cloak of green chlorophyll and showing their true colors of gold, burgundy, scarlet, Chartreuse and orange. Your challenge is to show us a project drenched in fall colors!

Hippie chick leaves

For my project I knew immediately that I wanted to create a wonderland tree.  After the weather we’ve had here on the East Coast there was no shortage of branches to choose from right in my back yard.  In fact I had my pick of the litter as this branch was clipped from a large bough that came down just  missing my son’s swing set.

Originally, I planned to use the Tim Holtz Tattered Leaves die but unfortunately I was late to the party AGAIN and it seemed to be sold out everywhere I looked.  Just as I was beginning to fret everything fell into place (literally).

While I was searching through the garage for the clippers to cut the branch I discovered a bunch of forgotten leaves my son and I had collected and pressed under heavy books.  There are no truer fall colors than those found on real leaves and I figured these would be the perfect canvases to showcase our sponsors stamps.

The stamp sets are absolutely fantastic!  With the new discovery of the pressed leaves I was able to showcase all the stamps from both the Alice I and Alice II sets.  All of the leaves were stamped with Black Soot distress ink and embossed with Ranger fine detail embossing powder.  The aroma of fall filled my studio after hitting the leaves with my heat gun…ahhhh autumn splendor! :)

Mod Podge works on pretty much ANYTHING

After stamping and embossing the leaves were given a coat of Mod Podge and then a second coat of Mod Podge sparkle.  Not only did the Mod Podge return the lush vibrant fall hues to the leaves it made them extra sturdy, pliable and a real “breeze” to work with er…man handle :)  I chipped off a few pieces on some of the leaves while applying the Mod Podge but what do you know the Mod Podge fixed my mistakes as well!  Yay Mod PODGE!!!  Here are some closeups of the Mod Podge leaves.

How cool is this charm?  It’s hard to tell in the photo but it is of Alice with the “Drink Me” bottle.  This charm and all the other charms wire wrapped to the Mod Podge leaves are from Blue Moon Beads Fairytale collection.  I’m kind of obsessed with these….I think I have pretty much bought every Alice in Wonderland style they had!  To see more of these magical charms check out my Altered Tea Set.

White Rabbit Charm

I couldn’t resist adding this White Rabbit charm to the front of the tree.  He was the finishing touch.  The White rabbit is from Blue Moon beads Fairytale collection.  I added beading detail using glass beads and crystals.  To finish it off I colored a silver heart charm with Alcohol inks.

Core’dinating leaves

To fill in the gaps where I didn’t have enough real leaves I used a sizzix die and cut leaves from Core’dinations cardstock (Tim Holtz/Ranger Distress collection) and DCWV patterned paper in “Hippie Chick”.  With the Core cardstock I sanded the front of the leaves to create a nice tattered edge and show the colored core.  The front was stamped with a leaf stamp in Vintage Photo distress ink.  On the back I stamped with the Indigo Blu crackle stamp in white and went over it with other Indigo Blu stamps in Vintage Photo.   The back of the patterned paper leaves were colored with a blend of Distress inks and stamped with a leaf stamp.

Thanks for sticking with me through another long post.  I hope you enjoyed this walk through Wonderland with me.  There is still time to show Your fall colors at the Altered Alice….

Have a “wonder”full day!!
